Beware of This and That

Fantastic Contraption

It is within my sleek interpodular device that I ride the quasi-local waves of digital information, occasionally washing up on the shore of an event I can physically attend. Such occurrences are becoming more and more common and certainly the most enjoyable of them of late has been the sub-visit last weekend to the Device Gallery in La Jolla, California.

The show was brought to my attention a short while ago over at Coilhouse and its run time just happen to overlap that of SDCC and my visit to SoCal. As my generous hosts are of the gallery venturing persuasion it was added to the itinerary before I even touched down.

I’m hardly an art buff (or one that can afford to purchase such objects) but had heard of several of the artists participating in the exhibit, mainly Stephane Halleux and the self-taught pinhole photographer Wayne Martin Belger.

While the spindly-limbed creations of Mr. Halleux were a delight to behold it was the sheer potency of the Deer and Untouchable installations that I found the most captivating. The Untouchable camera, which Belger constructed, pumps HIV positive blood as a red filter and the shots have been painted with a prickly pear tea. Mr. Belger has eleven cameras, all differently themed (underwater to one containing a chunk of the World Trade Center) and each presents a severely intentional collected process as well as finished product.

The rest of the set is here (and a better one here via Coilhouse). If you have the means or dwell in the area I highly recommend swinging by. The director on hand, Amy, was extremely knowledgeable, quick to impart each piece’s background and eager to spin those creations whose kinetic nature I dared not unveil.

And of course this was all kicked off with the TV spot that aired during the LOST Season 3 finale.

Can’t say I’ve been very active with the latest ARGs but there has been a degree of involvement, what with the recent convention and excess of browsing time at work. Not going to be leading any trail heads but even my casual interest has been picking up of late and I’ve enjoyed following the latest in the LOST game despite the somewhat disappointing Recruiting Booth last week.

Interviewees were displayed on mounted screens above each chamber with headphones affixed as they answered a series of questions. Pretty cool but not exactly in line with the string of more immersion-friendly recruiting e-mails that were sent out. Would have liked to have seen something more akin to what most career fairs offer in terms of company representation in place of something so flashy but hey, it’s freakin’ comic-con. Flashy is essential, as are khaki-clad blonds sporting Australian accents.

Wasn’t able to snag an interview myself after chatting up the staff, this being 10ish Thursday, but I hadn’t made it a priority and can’t complain as the booth was packed. The wiki has the low down on what transpired both during the interviews and at the LOST panel later. Cool stuff.

If you’d like to read up on the latest goings on check out the lostpedia wiki or Unfiction forums.

PotD – Brainsss

SPOILER ALERT:
Here’s where the lament of the white collar workin’ man rises fitfully from spoiled lungs.

As perhaps you deduced from my recent rabid postings, these last 5 days have found me on vacation – feet lightly dusted with the sand of sunny SoCal as I girded my quivering loins for the nerdgasm that was SDCC. Flew out to the dwelling of long time friends toting the necessaries early the Weds prior and hit the ground running, never glancing back. Heck, I’m still finding seaweed in places that don’t get mentioned in polite conversation (the washing machine, ho ho!).

I need not describe the joy of the con, returning home strained and uncomfortably full of fine sushi, or the satisfaction of being the One True Lord of Catan. The pleasures of fish both raw and fried were known while visions of costumed robot vixens pleasantly plagued my few non-waking hours, only to be shattered as I awoke bright-eyed to the newly found horror of forced photo reference with questionable back-lighting, lithe frame shaking from the strain of Just One More Pose as the shooting sparks graced my milky back meat.

Disjointed? A bit. High fives all around? You bet your ass.

This morning I grudgingly returned to the office alongside my above-pictured undead ilk, heads weighed down in the despair of normalcy despite the brilliantly shining sun and fresh blood a’ pumping.

What can you do.

I still have plenty of shots to sort through from the con, Device Gallery, Torrey Pines, and other TomFoolery. It’s comforting, these brief pixel regressions to a happier, more awkward yet enjoyably proper time spent among friends. Away from the limping, downcast undead of the dally grind.

Seek the Six – San Diego Sky Writing

Taken from the San Diego zoo.

Was beaten to the punch by Becky prior to its first completion (there were two that I saw) and the veritable sea of craning necks, plus accompanying comments, from zoo attendees was priceless.

Clearly being played up due to Comic-Con weekend, this being my second encounter with meat space exposure.

SDCC Part 1

Long day at the con starts with a delivery.

Shot well over a hundred photos today, first batch is working its way up as I sit in a sushi induced coma. (Sure Tom, the 28 piece platter was a great idea) Plenty of toys, cosplay, ARG, and various examples of making my evenly-haired accomplice feel as uncomfortable as possible. My favorite of which was a strained posing with a pair of Suicide Girls, twin nymphets quick to comply with a smile as they promptly sandwiched. Good stuff.

The con did not fail to please, sufficient oratory will have to wait until tomorrow as I haven’t even finished separating the visual wheat from the chaff to say nothing of digesting the experience as a whole.

And washed the feeling of thousands from my grimey self.

Subjects to be expounded upon:

  • Brief ARG meetup
  • Making Tom pose
  • Cosplayers
  • Items Acquired
  • Critical Mass
  • Surprisingly positive commentary on attendees
  • Performance of rental lens
  • Conclusion
