Beware of This and That

PotD – Work in Progress

August 31st, 2008 ryan

Spent a chunk of the day breathing in sawdust, scratching out temporary lines, and mixing up epoxy. Dragged a half-formed plan and decrepit table out in to the sun to see if a bit of sweat and power tool action could combine to form the product As Seen Previously only in the looping sandbox atop my shoulders.

It went hella good. Still got all the digits and things are currently curing that should be ripe for the forming in the morning. Documented the lot, might make for a decent write up.

As a logic-tamer in the IT field I don’t get to go all hands-on much anymore. Sure, it was common practice back when I with my Former Employer but it’s been years since I inhaled solder smoke or stripped a bundle of wires with my teeth.

Today was intensely satisfying.

This is Halloween

August 30th, 2008 ryan

8 weeks to go and yet, here we go.

So kitsch, so trite, encompassing quite a bit of what I can’t stand of the American upper white middle class (where I grew up, for the record).

But truth be told I love this crap.

It’s likely produced in some horrid sweatshop, mouldering in musty warehouses for the off season only to be reborn as soon as summer starts to strain. No clue how the holiday’s origins have mutated in to the animatronic orgy you see above but pirate themed miniature haunted houses? A campy Egyptian roundabout?

I mean, damn, they have me pegged.

Stage Two of new project: gathering materials.

Glad to have the truck today as the above-pictured pegboard only comes in 4′x8′ sheets. Pretty pleased with the plan thus far, hopefully it will flesh out the same.

The cart was totally rolling away when I shot this.

PotD – Clover

August 27th, 2008 ryan

It took this sign for me to realize that my local coffee shop had a Clover. Been going there just shy of two years.  Son of a bitch.

Like any snobbish foodie my internet trawlings extend beyond simple recipes. As a tech enthusiast I tend to hear about innovations across the board. I couldn’t tell you which genre first broached the subject of this device but I can point you to a pretty decent write up in last month’s Wired that covers its history.

Basically it’s an $11,000 one-cup brewer put together by some engineer coffee nerds that allows precise control over all of the factors that make up the rather simple process of putting beans in water. One can regulate the temperature, brew time, and amount of grounds. The thing caused quite the ruckus in the coffee scene, only more so when the CEO of Starbucks caught a whiff and acquired the whole company.

As a person that grinds their own beans and prefers the use of a French press this device intrigued me. I’ll slam diner coffee like the average Joe but can certainly appreciate superior quality when it’s swirling in my mouth in front of me.

So I tried a $6 12oz cup of Gaturiri. No cream no sugar. It was a fine cup to be sure but I’d really have to try it side by side an alternate brewing method to really notice a difference.

At least I can say I’ve tried it, surely many a hipster will swoon at the thought.

I love these guys.

Walking around the suburbs force full auditory immersion, a rising cacophony of insectile friction that flows from tree to tree – each orchestra competing with the one next to it. Of course the above is but the leavings as they crawl from earth to sky.

These are the annuals, shorter and stouter than their 17-year brethren. Keeping a few choice specimens in planters or alcohol measures the extent of my infatuation, though the 17-year ones do make for good eating.

Other people, well, they love these winged violinists far more than I.

Here’s a bit of lush and sleek vs gray and chipped as I continue my series of commuting moments through the bowels of downtown Chicago.

Tiny smooth lawn is both tiny and smooth. While the stench of exhaust prevails there are numerous locations where I’m sure thousands of dollars are spread as fertilizer for little displays such as this, and that green provides a pleasant contrast as it soaks up both the gaze from the sun and those that pass it by.

This is where I used to pick up the Brown line. Another oddity awash in the concrete sea. Better frame of reference from the street view. It’s like a Victorian housing facade that rattles with the passing of every train.

They Do Nosink.

This post is brought to you by GLASSES.

They aren’t made of glass but because of timely eye parasites are currently playing their part. I’ve been rocking contacts for 17 years now, my nearsightedness moderately terrible so without I’m a bumbling, squinted wanderer unless I have the above infernal contraptions working double time for the ol’ oculars.

Despite the limited vision of my periphery I do like to have the OPTION of wearing these things, hence no previous laZ0ring. Nothing smacks of intellectual rigor like those twin plastic orbs, and I like having that gun in my arsenal.

But for now it’s a pain. Look! …a BUS!?

PotD – Hello, and Welcome to the Enrichment Center

August 21st, 2008 ryan

I’m constantly scanning my commute pathways for brief glimpses of awesome.
You get zero guesses as to what immediately exploded in my mind when I saw this.

It was some sort of mammoth paper shredding truck. The kind whose services office companies hire to do their dirty work for them. I guess they are frothing with both peril and neat control panels that were decidedly unattended.

I should have pressed that shit so hard.

I’ve been gaming off of brickly laptops since 2003, the last of which has since returned to the sands from which it came (true story!). It handled HL2ep2 for a while, but any underwater scenarios rendered the screen completely black. Then TF2 fell down a well. I hear it down there, legs broken, calling for help from time to time.

I just want to play some Portal, man, but refuse to render a new gaming rig into existence until after I move.
Oi.
